about

The ecstasy of worship: ancient, sacred drumming of the African Diaspora in the Circumcaribbean with a new global message of spirituality and hope.

ORA TAMBÓ (Pray Drum) is a personal tribute of Istvan Dely, a one-time Congo tatan'ganga priest in Cuba and the first conga drummer in his native Hungary, to his mentors in drumming and spirituality: tata Cuatrovientos Probafuerza and Yayi Chola of Ganabacoa. His tribute adds to the rich legacy he inherited, the harvest of a forty-year spiritual and musical quest on three continents. He raises that legacy to new heights in concert with the contemporary and global spirituality enshrined in Bahá'u'lláh's Revelation.

For a significant segment of the world's population, sacred music rests upon drums, and worship is inseparable from drum dancing. "In Africa - as with the Caribbean Diaspora - the drum is king. The drum's rank in black music is both rhythmic and melodic and even oratorical, besides being sacred and thaumaturgical... It is the supreme ruler, always accompanied by other instruments which, coming from all the realms of Nature, are his vassals and make up his symphonic retinue" (Fernando Ortiz). ORA TAMBÓ is a veritable treasure trove for drummers and drum-lovers, as well as delicate spiritual food for souls thirsting for the ecstasy of worship.

ORA TAMBÓ brings together prayers by Bahá'u'lláh, 'Abdu'l-Bahá and the Báb recited, chanted, and sung in Spanish, English, Haitian Creole, Portuguese, Chinese, Persian, Arabic, Garífuna, and Hungarian using the sacred African drumming traditions of Cuban Santería, Palo, Haitian Vodoun, Colombian Lumbalú, Puerto Rican Bomba, Bush Negro Winti, and Brazilian Candomblé in a universally viable way of expressing the veneration of the sacred which lies at the very heart of every culture.
